HOWTO: Set up or move Second Opinion data to a network

Document ID: Q101016

This article applies to the following:
Product(s): Second Opinion Standard 4.0
Last Revised On: April 24, 2001

Summary

Second Opinion can be set up so that the program is installed locally on a computer, but the data and images are stored on a network file server. This allows you to have multiple computers access the data and/or use the network backup procedures to back up your images and data. This document lists the procedure to follow when setting up or moving your information to a new location. This procedure can be performed any time after the program was installed.

Discussion

By default, Second Opinion installs itself in the C:\Opinion folder (directory) with the following directory structure:

Programs: C:\Opinion\Programs
Database: C:\Opinion\Database
Documents: C:\Opinion\Document (or C:\Opinion\Images if upgraded from an older version)

If you installed Second Opinion to a different directory, use that directory instead. To move the database and documents to a shared network drive:

  1. If you do not already have a drive letter mapped to your network drive, create one (for example F:)
  2. Move the C:\Opinion\Database folder to the network folder (for example, F:\Database). If you only copy the directory, make sure you rename the original directory to something else (for example C:\Opinion\Old Database) so that the program no longer uses it.
  3. Move the C:\Opinion\Document (or C:\Opinion\Images) folder to the network folder (for example F:\Document). If you only copy the directory, make sure you rename the original directory to something else (for example C:\Opinion\Old Document) so that the program no longer uses it.
  4. Run Second Opinion.
  5. The program will first ask you where the database is installed. Type the path to the new Database directory (for example F:\Database).
  6. The program will next ask you where the documents are. Type the path to the new Document directory (for example F:\Document).
  7. The program will then start normally.

You have now moved the Second Opinion data to your network.
