HOWTO: How do I answer when Setup asks to Add Station or Replace?

Document ID: Q101017

This article applies to the following:
Product(s): Second Opinion Standard 4.0
Last Revised On: April 24, 2001

Summary

During the installation of Second Opinion, you receive a box similar to the following:

Discussion

The purpose of this box is to allow you to add a computer to a shared network installation of Second Opinion. There are, however, other situations that can cause this message box to appear. Please read through this entire document before performing any actions.

When Setup begins, it looks for an existing copy of Second Opinion installed on your computer. It does this by checking for the presence of the Opinion.ini file in the Windows directory and confirming that program location it points to is valid. If this file is found and the program location it points to is valid, Setup performs an upgrade and this message is not displayed.

If the Opinion.ini file is not found or the program location it points to is not valid, Setup assumes this is a new installation on this computer. If the destination location you specify already contains a copy of the Second Opinion program then Setup assumes that you are adding an additional workstation to a shared network installation or wish to replace an existing network installation with the version on the setup disk.

To: Do this:
To add the Second Opinion program icon on this computer and enable it to access the shared program. Click Add Station
To replace your existing installation with the new installation. WARNING: This will erase any existing Second Opinion data and images you may already have! Click Replace.
To install Second Opinion separately from the existing program. Click Back and choose a different Destination Location.
If you are installing a different version than the existing program. See the section below.

If you are upgrading from a previous version

If you get this box while you are upgrading from a previous version of Second Opinion, follow these steps if you wish to retain your existing data. This example assumes that your existing installation is at F:\Opinion; if your existing copy is elsewhere use that location in the instructions.

This procedure is necessary since you have to manually perform steps that would otherwise be automatically done by the installation program of the previous version.

  1. Exit the Second Opinion Standard 4.0 installation.
  2. Make sure no one is using the shared copy Second Opinion on your network.
  3. Open the Windows Start menu and click Programs, Accessories, Notepad. This will run the Notepad word processor.
  4. Enter the following lines at the top of the new document:
[Environment]
ProgramBase=F:\Opinion

If your existing installation is at a location different than F:\Opinion, enter that location instead, after the equal sign.

  1. Open Notepad's File menu and click Save.
  2. Change the Save in location to C:\Windows and enter a filename of "Opinion.ini".
  3. Exit Notepad.
  4. Re-run the Second Opinion Standard 4.0 installation (If your CD-ROM drive is D:, the setup program is D:\Setup\Setup.exe).
  5. Click Continue in the Welcome screen.
  6. Setup should inform you that it found a previous version (if it did not, Exit and verify that you entered the correct information in step 3). Click Continue and follow the normal upgrade instructions.
  7. After installation is complete, open the Windows Start menu and click Programs, Second Opinion, Standard Administrator.
  8. Complete all of the Site and Station information screens.
  9. When the program asks you to enter an Authorization Code, follow the instructions on the Registration form on the CD. If you do not enter an Authorization Code, the program will have a 25-folder limit and stop working in 30 days. You can enter an Authorization Code any time; see your Administrator manual for instructions.
  10. Your program has been upgraded and can now be run from this computer. You may click Cancel in the Administrator's Login screen if you wish.

Next steps:

You may need to set up your modem and video capture settings. Please see your Second Opinion Standard users guide for instructions.

If other computers are also using the shared copy of Second Opinion, you should perform the upgrade from them as well (steps 8-10, above).
