PRB: Archive program crashed while archiving or restoring

Document ID: Q101019

This article applies to the following:
Product(s): Second Opinion Standard 4.0, Second Opinion Professional 3.x
Last Revised On: April 24, 2001

Summary

While running an Archive or Restore operation, the archive program crashed before it could complete the operation.

Discussion

If the archive program crashes or is otherwise interrupted while performing Archive or Restore operations, it could leave the information for a folder record incomplete.

Crash during Archive

The archive program processes the information in up to two passes. The first pass copies all of the data to the archive volume and does not alter the Second Opinion files. The second pass depends on the archive type: Create a copy does not use a second pass; Move documents deletes the document files and marks them as archived in the database; Move folders deletes all files and database records for that folder.

Solution - Crash during "Create a copy"

No damage was done. Delete the files in the archive and repeat the archive process. If the program crashes again, contact Customer Support.

Solution - Crash during "Move documents"

If the crash occurred in the first pass (when files are copied to the archive volume), delete the files in the archive and repeat the archive. If you do not know which pass the program was on, you can examine the log file generated as follows:

  1. Locate and open the Arclog.txt file in the Second Opinion database directory (for Second Opinion Standard this is normally "C:\Opinion\Database". For Second Opinion Professional this is normally "C:\Program Files\Second Opinion\Database").
  2. Check if the following section appears anywhere in the document:
============================================
Removing archived document files from master database
============================================

If the section does not appear then the crash occurred in the first pass. Delete the files in the archive and repeat the archive.

If the crash occurred during the second pass, then some documents were moved and others were not. You have two choices:

  • Create a second archive. When Second Opinion tries to open a document it will ask you for one of the two archives (depending on where the crash took place, it is possible that one document file was deleted but not marked as archived in the database, in this case you must manually restore that document's folder from the first archive).
  • If you wish to have all of the documents in one archive, you must first restore the partial archive to put the documents back into Second Opinion and then repeat the archive procedure.

Solution - Crash during "Move folders"

If the crash occurred in the first pass (when files are copied to the archive volume), delete the files in the archive and repeat the archive. If you do not know which pass the program was on, you can examine the log file generated as follows:

  1. Locate and open the Arclog.txt file in the Second Opinion database directory (for Second Opinion Standard this is normally "C:\Opinion\Database". For Second Opinion Professional this is normally "C:\Program Files\Second Opinion\Database").
  2. Check if the following section appears anywhere in the document:
============================================
Removing archived folders from master databases
============================================

If the section does not appear then the crash occurred in the first pass. Delete the files in the archive and repeat the archive.

If the crash occurred during the second pass, then some documents and folders were moved and others were not. You have two choices:

  • Create a second archive to contain the remaining folders (depending on where the crash took place, it is possible that one folder's documents were deleted but not deleted in the database, in this case you must manually restore that folder from the first archive).
  • If you wish to have all of the documents in one archive, you must first restore the archive to put the files and records back into Second Opinion, and then repeat the archive procedure.

Crash during Restore

Repeat the restore procedure. If the crash occurs again, contact Customer Support.
